As someone who gripes as little as possible, I have finally come to the end of my rope.
No matter what anyone “in the business” says, VoIP sucks. Using Skype for business phone calls sucks. Google Voice sucks. It is all unreliable, intermittent and the sound quality just plain sucks. There, I said it.
I will have to get a “land line” and DSL to augment my Comcast internet “service,” so that I can have reliable phones.
After asking a brilliant friend what his solution would be, I’m going to implement it, at roughly 5x the cost of a regular phone line. Having 100% uptime is critical to any business, and I’m in business, so I need phones that work when people call.
Enough complaining from me. My brilliant friend is available for problem solving and consulting. Send me a comment on this post, and I’ll reply with his email address.
It’s time to get out in this gorgeous Portland weather!

Try BroadVoice. Cheap as heck. Reliable VoIP. Been using it for years.
Thank you, Joshua! I will look into BroadVoice.
Hi Thubten! Sorry to hear you’ve had such rotten luck with Skype. I do agree that Google Voice’s call clarity is lacking at best. Very echo-y and static filled for me. Skype has been pretty good for my small business. We’ve used it for about three years now and the call quality is almost always excellent to good.
Let us know how BroadVoice works if you give it a try.
Thanks, Allie!
Yes, I’ll let everyone know!
Hi Thubten, I feel your pain and have had my share of skype issues. I personally use RingCentral (ringcentral.com) and have done so for 5 years with 100% uptime and features that match a big business for $30/month. Their service is excellent, call the sales line and ask for Zach he’ll answer all of your questions. (No he’s not a friend but like everyone at RC he is totally committed to excellent service).Good luck!
Thank you, Karen! I will have to check them out. Half of the issue is the cable, not the phone service provider. All of the suggestions I’ve had so far depend on Comcast to provide the signal.
Hi Thubten! I just wanted to let you know that I sent you an email.
